Etiquette in Malawi

Malawi is located in southeast Africa and has a population of 16.4 million people.

The nation is a unitary presidential republic.

The official language of Malawi is English, though Chichewa is a recognized national language.

Malawi is a majority Christian nation.

The currency of Malawi is the kwacha.

People of the same gender shake with their right hand and show respect by holding their wrist with the left hand. In mixed company, men should wait for a woman to offer to shake hands before making any assumptions. Sometimes a bow or nod will be performed instead.

Don’t make the “okay” hand gesture, the gesture in which one makes a circle by touching the thumb to the finger. It’s rude.
