Etiquette in Kazakhstan

The nation is a unitary dominant-party presidential republic.

The official languages of Kazakhstan are Kazakh and Russian.

Most citizens follow Islam, though there is a sizeable Christian minority.

The currency of Kazakhstan is the tenge.

Handshakes are usually with both hands. Some women will kiss each other on the cheek if they are well known. Close friends may also hug.

Don’t use first names until encouraged to do so.

Kazakh men may not shake hands with women. Men should wait to see if a woman offers her hand before attempting to shake hands with her.

Gifts are opened when received. Don’t bring alcoholic beverages unless you know your host and hostess drink.

Food is sometimes eaten by hand. You may be invited to sit on the floor in rural areas.
