The handshake and eye contact will do in most greeting situations. Men and women or women greeting women may choose to simply nod. Hugs are for those with whom there’s already a friendship.

You’re not on a first name basis with people you’ve just met. Use honorifics and surnames.

Punctuality is important, so try to be ten minutes earlier than your appointment.

Business partners don’t usually exchange gifts the first time they meet. They may be acceptable as the relationship grows, in particular if they are small in nature and say something about your home country. Early gifts will likely be corporate items such as pens and decals. Later gifts could be more along the lines of things given to a host in a home.

Good gifts to bring for a host or hostess include sweets, chocolates, and nice quality wine or liquor.

Family gifts should include little gifts for the children and elders.
