Etiquette in Jordan

Jordan is located in the Persian Gulf and has a population of 9.7 million people.

The nation is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy.

The official language of Jordan is Arabic.

The vast majority of citizens follow Sunni Islam.

The currency of Jordan is the Jordanian dinar.

Handshakes using the right hand will take some time as conversation takes place. A kiss on the cheek may follow with people who are close. Men and women greet the same sex in much the same way. Men greeting women should wait to see if the woman initiates the handshake.

Shorts are not welcome in Jordan and are viewed as being far too revealing for both genders. Men should choose long trousers and it’s best to select a buttoned shirt. A t-shirt is acceptable if it’s covering your upper arms and shoulders. Business casual may be acceptable in some industries, but conservative is safer.

Women should choose loose-fitting clothing that can’t be seen through, taking care to cover the back of the neck. Long hair shouldn’t be allowed to fall below the shoulders.
