Greetings Etiquette

Handshakes are usually with both hands. Some women will kiss each other on the cheek if they are well known. Close friends may also hug.

Don’t use first names until encouraged to do so.

Kazakh men may not shake hands with women. Men should wait to see if a woman offers her hand before attempting to shake hands with her.

Gift Giving Etiquette

Gifts are opened when received. Don’t bring alcoholic beverages unless you know your host and hostess drink.

Food is sometimes eaten by hand. You may be invited to sit on the floor in rural areas.
